This is the war going on between Google and Facebook. Google made a little change on its Terms of Services and created the big impact on world largest social network. So Google contact API not allowed anyone to import your contact list of your friends and coworkers email to other websites if you need it then offer reciprocity. So facebook doesn’t have this option they want allow you to access to the user social graph.

What does that means in easy word? When you signup on facebook they show you gmail contact importer in series and ask you to import your contacts from Gmail. This powerful feature helps to create social graphs. And Google stopped it because Facebook is not playing a fair game.

Facebook won’t allow you to import your friends contacts it allows you to export all you data like pictures, videos, events, messages, wall posts. But the most important data is not allowed to download like email address, phone numbers any contact information of your friends. So Facebook have threat to with this information that another services can create a social graph if they provide this information for importing. Now they want there monopoly.

Google Terms and Service for Contact importer API read the clause no. 5.8

“5.8. Google supports data portability. By accessing Content through the Contacts Data API or Portable Contacts API for use in your service or application, you are agreeing to enable your users to export their contacts data to other services or applications of their choice in a way that’s substantially as fast and easy as exporting such data from Google Contacts, subject to applicable laws.”

As Google said on this that they are committed to making it easiest for their users so they can make their data in and out from Google products. So that’s why Google have a separate team of engineers for working on importing and exporting tools for users.

So Google have decided to change and educate users about how they get in the trap when sites like Facebook import their contacts. Google users can export their all data on computers in open format and after doing it they can import it anywhere they want. But will not allow websites to import contacts from Google with API unless they allow exports similar to other websites.

Google don’t want to killed by his now sword so he stopped the importing. But Facebook is to big now to compete. They are very far away from Google but I think Google is the only one right now how can fight electronic war with Facebook.
